Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage supports children’s development from birth to age five. At JCS, our EYFS journey begins at age 2 and continues through to Reception at age 5.
EYFS at JCS
- Preschool (Fireflies): 2–3 years
- Preschool (Butterflies): 3–4 years
- Reception: 4–5 years
Our youngest learners take part in meaningful, play-based experiences that encourage them to explore, investigate, discover and create as they build strong foundations for future learning.
How Children Learn in EYFS
Learning at JCS blends teacher-guided experiences with child-initiated play. Children follow their interests while teachers observe, support and extend learning with:
- Indoor and outdoor learning environments
- Hands-on exploration and discovery
- Opportunities to make choices and plan their own activities
This approach nurtures confidence, independence, curiosity and early social-emotional development.
Areas of Learning in EYFS
The EYFS curriculum includes seven key areas:
Prime Areas (Core foundations for all learning)
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Specific Areas (Enhancing knowledge and skills)
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Our EYFS team observe, support and nurture our youngest learners whilst considering the three Characteristics of Learning:
- Playing and Exploring – engagement
- Active Learning – motivation
- Creating and Thinking Critically – critical thinking
Our programme aims to develop independent, motivated and engaged learners who are ready for the next stage of their education and equipped with essential early skills. Within EYFS, even our youngest learners are encouraged to embrace the six JCS Learner Traits to be independent, resilient, collaborative, engaged, reflective and creative. These foundations are built through rich play experiences, guided interactions, and opportunities for children to explore, investigate and express themselves.
